The Melbourne Rebels crossed the tryline five times at AAMI Park as they beat the Toyota Cheetahs 36-14 after trailing 14-10 at half-time.

The win is the side from Melbourne’s fifth win of the season and places them at the top of the Australian conference for the time being.

Centre, Reece Hodge, scored a try in each half, while Lopeti Timani, Jonah Placid and Tamati Ellison also crossed the whitewash.

Hooker, Torsten van Jaarsveld, and fullback, Clayton Blommetjies, scored the Cheetahs tries.

Handling errors and ill-discipline cost the men from Bloemfontein, with 12 handling errors as opposed to the 3 by the Rebels.

The Cheetahs also conceded 13 penalties, while their defence was also less than desirable. Franco Smiths’ charger slipped a total of 21 tackles in the match.

Ellison’s last minute intercept try also meant that the home side was able to bag a bonus point by scoring three more tries than their opponents.

The Cheetahs will now head to Brisbane where they will tackle the Reds next week Saturday.

In this morning’s other game, the Sharks edged a 14-man Highlanders 15-14 at the Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin.

The defending champions had to play with one man short for the majority of the match after Jason Emery received a red card for taking Springbok, Willie le Roux, out in the air in the first half.
