It was mission accomplished for the Toyota Free State Cheetahs after the team had hammered Toyota Verblitz 62-13 on Saturday during their friendly match played in Toyota City, Japan.

The Cheetahs ran in nine tries, with the replacement hooker, Elandre Huggett, scoring a brace as they taught their Japanese counterparts a lesson in rugby.

While the exhibition match in Aichi was a friendly, it served as preparation of the Cheetahs as they are shifting their focus from the Super Rugby to the Currie Cup.

The scoreline can be somewhat deceiving and a lot of credit has to go to the Verblitz scrum, which is under the guidance of the legendary former Springbok and Cheetahs prop, Os du Randt. The Cheetahs scrum has been outstanding this season and the pack from Verblitz didn’t make matters easier for the side from the City of Roses.

After the match, Du Randt said he expects the Cheetahs will come good and have a solid Currie Cup campaign. “I thought the Cheetahs looked strong, I thought their set-pieces worked well and I think they will be a strong side in the Currie Cup.

“Going back to South Africa, it’s a good thing for them to be able to keep their momentum going out of the Super Rugby, so hopefully they will do well.

The Cheetahs captain and Springbok flank feels it was a good outing for them to rectify some mistakes from the Super Rugby.

“The game was very good, it was a very fast game,” said Mohoje. “The guys from Verblitz really came for us, but we had a plan as well. We had a tough Super Rugby season, so we wanted to rectify our mistakes and hopefully we can carry this confidence into the Currie Cup back at home.”

The Currie Cup Premier Division is scheduled to kick off on Saturday 6 August. The Free State Cheetahs are scheduled to play away in their opening game of the campaign.
