The Toyota Free State Cheetahs secured a home semi-final in the Currie Cup on Friday evening by thrashing the Pumas 52-10 in Nelspruit.

The Cheetahs crossed the whitewash on eight occasions with Rayno Benjamin scoring a hat-trick, Tier Schoeman dotting down for brace while Francois Venter, Elandre Huggett and Uzair Cassiem all scored as well.

The win means that the Cheetahs will end at the top of the standings, despite the outcome of their derby against the Griquas on Saturday.

The Peacock Blues in their turn unfortunately lost 52-31 to Western Province in Kimberley.

The Griquas still have the slightest of chances of making the play-offs, however, it’s highly unlikely.

For the Griquas to reach the knockouts they need a big win over the Cheetahs, the Golden Lions and the Sharks have to draw in Johannesburg and the Boland Cavaliers need to beat Province at Newlands.

At this stage the Cheetahs are on a collision course to meet the Golden Lions at home in the semi-finals.

While the side from Bloemfontein beat the defending champions 37-29 during the round robins, the side from Johannesburg will be a totally different prospect.

With the semi-finals being postponed by a week, it gives the Springboks, who are currently playing in the Rugby Championship, an opportunity to play in the world’s toughest domestic competition.

The Lions will see the return of Malcom Marx, Faf de Klerk and Julian Redelinghuys, while Warren Whitely, Elton Jantjies, Jaco Kriel, Franco Mostert and Lionel Mapoe will be off to their respective clubs in Japan.

For the Cheetahs the only returning Springboks will be the South African Player of the Year, Lood de Jager, and Oupa Mohoje. While international experience doesn’t count in the Cheetahs' favour, confidence does and the young and excited Cheetahs remain the team to beat.

Saturday afternoon’s derby between the Free State Cheetahs and the Griquas at the Toyota Stadium kicks off at 14:00.
