Joost placed on oxygen─── MORGAN PIEK 13:30 Fri, 20 Jan 2017
The Springbok and world rugby great, Joost van der Westhuizen, has been placed on oxygen.
The living legend has been battling with Motor Neuron Disease for the past eight years after being diagnosed with the illness in 2011.
Van der Westhuizen first showed symptoms of the debilitating condition in 2009, after complaining of weakness in his arm.
Testament to his never-say-die attitude both on and off the field, Van der Westhuizen actively campaigns for issues relating to MND through the J9 Foundation, a charity devoted to MND issues which he founded.
The family of the former Bulls and Springbok scrumhalf confirmed that he has been on oxygen for quite some time but opted to keep it quiet for the sake of his children.
The member of the World Rugby Hall of Fame represented the Springboks in 86 Tests, scored 38 tries and played in three Rugby World Cups.
