Free State Stars - Kickoff

Free State Stars have silverware in their sight after advancing to the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup.

On Saturday afternoon, Ea Lla Kota beat the much more fancied Wits 5-4 on penalties after their match ended goalless after regulation time and extra time.

Wits coach, Gavin Hunt, says he is perplexed by his side's lack of goals against the team from Qwaqwa.

“Yeah, we’re very disappointed.

“It’s one of those things. I think its seven games in a row now that we haven’t been able to score against them – four games this year, and two or three games last year – it’s mind-boggling!

"Yes it’s unfortunate, but congratulations to them, I wish them well.”

The second quarter-final of the day saw Orlando Pirates’ purple patch continue to make it 8 wins in a row in all competitions, when they beat Mamelodi Sundowns 2-0.

Strike Tendai Ndoro netted for the Buccaneers in the 110th minute to score his 10th goal in 9 matches.

Friday evening it was SuperSport United who advanced to the last four with a 2-1 win over the in-form Black Aces.

Yesterday saw the biggest shock in the competition when the National First Division side, Baroka FC stunned Polokwane City with a 2-0 win.

Baroka coach, Kgoloko Thobejane, feels that even though they battled Polokwane on the field, they are still brothers.

“I feel very much pity because they have a very strong team, and they are hungry… they want to play football. They are our brothers, this Polokwane City.

“These two goals were good for them because if we scored six. How can you humiliate your own brothers in their own backyard in front of all these people?”

Thobejane, added that he doesn’t care who they play in the semis, because they will play in the final.

“They know now, these supporters, that there is an elephant in this province. Let them come in numbers and follow this elephant, support it so it can grow and grow."

The draw for the semi-final and venues will be made later this week.
