The first round of matches in the 2016/17 Premier Soccer League are done and dusted and it wasn’t a good start for Bloemfontein Celtic.

The Siwelele faithful were silenced at home last night with the team losing 1-0 to Maritzburg United at the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium.

The match went into the half time break goalless, but the Maritzburg captain, Kurt Lentjies, broke the deadlock in the 50th minute with the match-winning goal.

The former Celtic skipper, Bevan Fransman, was on debut for Maritzburg and also earned the Man of the Match Award against his former club.

The former Bafana Bafana defender, Fransman, said it was a great way to make his debut for his new side.

“I prepared for this game quite well mentally just to get over the hurdle of coming to Bloemfontein to play against my old team,” said Fransman.

“I enjoyed my game tonight and I couldn’t have asked for better debut for my new team.

“We defenders pride ourselves on clean sheets, so it’s not a bad way to start.”

In last night’s other matches Platinum Stars beat SuperSport United 1-0 at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg and Orlando Pirates thrashed Clinton Larsen’s Golden Arrow 3-1 in Soweto.

Tendai Ndoro scored all three the Buccaneers goals for the first hat-trick of the season.
