The need for members of the KhoiSan-communities to receive education in their mother tongue and their desire to read and write in their native tongue was highlighted this month during public hearing in the Northern Cape, Western Cape and Gauteng.
The hearings formed part of a national investigation by the South African Human Rights Commission into possible human rights violations against these communities. Celebrating World Book Day – on 23 April - another school in a poor community in the Free State received a library – something the children in KhoiSan-communities can only dream of.
Cathy Dlodlo reports about the needs of these communities and promise of a whole new world that these books hold.
