South Africa’s leading men’s single player, Kevin Anderson, has been knocked out of the French Open in the first round.
France’s Stephane Robert gave the 6ft8 tall South African his marching orders with a 6-4, 6-2, 1-6 and 7-5 win in Paris.
The world number one, Novak Djokovic, hardly broke a sweat in dispatching Yen-Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipai in straight sets with a 6-4, 6-1 and 6-1 win.
The second-seeded Andy Murray of Scotland need five sets to knock Radek Stepanek out with a 3-6, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 en 7-5 victory.
The King of Clay, Rafael Nadal, hammered the big-serving Australian, Sam Groth, 6-1, 6-1 and 6-1.
In the woman’s singles, the third-seeded German, Angelique Kerber, became the first big name to exit the year's second Grand Slam. The 2016 Australian Open champion was sent packing after losing in three sets to Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands.
