The 2016 US Open got underway at Flushing Meadows in New York and day one produced no major shocks.
It’s the year's fourth and final Grand Slam and the woman’s number one, Serena Williams, has her sights set on a record 23rd major title and she will face Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova in the first round.
Meanwhile, the Australian Open champion and Wimbledon finalist, Angelique Kerber, advanced after Slovenia’s Polona Hercog retired injured.
The French Open champion, Garbine Muguruza, also advanced after the Spaniard beat Belgium’s Elise Mertens 2-6, 6-0, 6-3, while the world number 9, Svetlana Kuznetsova, thrashed Italy’s Francesca Schiavone.
In the men’s singles, world number one Novak Djokovic, beat Poland’s Jerzy Janowicz 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 and 6-1.
The King of Clay, Rafael Nadal, knocked out Denis Istomin with a 6-1, 6-4 and 6-2 win and South Africa’s big serving Kevin Anderson beat Japan’s Yosjihito Nishioka 6-3, 7-6 and 6-4.
