Jay Thomson from team MTN Energade is the winner of the ninth MTN OFM Classic which took place on Sunday, 1 November 2009 in Bloemfontein. Thomson won the 97km road race with a very fast sprint towards the finish.
Young Tyler Day was in second place and Argus 2009 winner, Arran Brown from team Medscheme came in third over the finish. As one of the biggest races in South African cycling, the Classic has a diverse route that consists of flat sections, a stretch in the suburbs of the city, with surprising up-hills even on the extended N1 part of the race.
The event, which has grown over the past few years, is perceived by many cyclists as possibly one of the best organised races in South Africa. Organisers presented the first MTN OFM Mountain bike race at the Windmill Casino on Saturday. The race was won by world champion Burry Stander.
This year the ladies 97 km event was won by Robyn de Groot from the Nashua Telecoms team. Robyn said that she tried to break away from the ladies in the first 5 kilometers of the race and then just kept her pace. Close on her heels was the Swedish champion Jennie Stenerhag racing in the colours of Alphapharm. Marissa van der Merwe from team MTN took third place.
