The Public Service Commissioner in the Free State has expressed concerns over the state of various government departments and service delivery in the province.

Provincial commissioner, Henk Boshoff, told OFM News they will soon embark on inspections and follow up on whether various departments have implemented recommendations they have previously made. This comes just a week after Commissioner, Michael Seloane, released a national report on the state of the public service for the first quarter of this year. The reported highlighted concerns over positions that have not been filled for a long period come amidst an increasing number of service delivery complaints where government departments operate with inadequate staff. Boshoff says more than 7 200 vacant posts in the provincial government still needs to be filled. He says although over 54 000 vacancies have been filled, they have recommended that the vacancies be filled as a matter of urgency as it affects service delivery.

Following recent protest action at Pelonomi Hospital and the provincial medical depot in Bloemfontein, Boshoff says they will soon focus on re-inspecting public healthcare facilities in the province.

The provincial Department of Health made national headlines last week after some patients in Pelonomi Hospital’s orthopedic wards were found unattended to without beds, sleeping on chairs for more than a week, while patients in the maternity wards, on the other hand, complained about long waiting periods and delayed responses. They also got under fire for mismanagement, the lack of infrastructure maintenance, a shortage of medical personnel and equipment, as well as poor working conditions at many of its facilities after employees embarked on a strike to protest against these issues.
