Free State police report a measure of calm has descended on Heilbron today after protests erupted in the town this week.

Police spokesperson Lorraine Earle says no incidents were reported during the night.

Police are keeping a watchful eye on the town, with Earle describing the situation as still being volatile. This as it has been reported that residents are threatening to continue with protest action, unless apprehended protesters are released.

Over 30 people were arrested for public violence on Thursday, August 16, including a man who was found in possession of a police officer’s firearm. The police officer was disarmed of his shotgun in the midst of the unrest.

OFM News previously reported residents torched a building belonging to Ngwathe Local Municipality and looted a local supermarket, over allegations of corruption at the municipality.

Meanwhile the Departments of Human Settlements, and Police, Roads, and Transport, met during the week to find an amicable solution to the unrest.

The R57, which was previously barricaded by protesters, remains open.
