There are several reasons for the alarming situation that has recently been witnessed in the red grass fields of the Free State and other areas.
Rick Dillon, farmer and board member of the GrassFed Association of South Africa, says red grass has not produced flowers or seeds this season, with the possible long-term extinction of some of these fields now a reality. Most of the causes are as a result of poor and short-sighted farming practices.
Dillon takes a closer look at some of the causes of this bizarre situation while also suggesting a few possible solutions.
