Didiza agrees alternative plans should be taken to address #SADrought─── CHRISTAL-LIZE MULLER 07:12 Thu, 09 Jan 2020
The Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development agrees with organised agricultural structures about the significance of alternative plans and working together to address the current drought situation in some parts of the country.
This is according to Reggie Ngcobo, spokesperson, after fruitful interaction by the agriculture minister, Thoko Didiza, and organised agriculture, at a meeting in Kimberley on Tuesday. Ngcobo says Northern Cape farmers used the opportunity to raise their concerns about drought conditions and government support, corruption, as well as the slow pace of government officials with regards to service delivery during the meeting. OFM News’ Christal-Lize Muller spoke to Ngcobo…
He says the department is in coherence with organised agriculture about the importance of planning ahead, especially if changing weather patterns contributing to severe drought conditions are taken into account.
Ngcobo says it must, however, be noted that government is supporting farmers through providing some form of drought relief, but the weak economy among others remains a huge challenge for the government. The department is, however, looking into its own budget to provide drought assistance.
