NW sporadic violence a concern - IEC | News Article

The constant violent protests in the North West province have raised sharp concerns across the province.

Since the proclamation of the 8 May 2019 election by President Cyril Ramaphosa, more violent protests due to the alleged lack of service delivery have flared up in the province.

During these protests foreign-owned shops have been looted along with private and government property destroyed by angry residents, which have resulted in the arrests of irate protestors.

In March, Premier Job Mokgoro and his team of MECs had to be whisked away by police as a community meeting looking into alleged gangsterism at Bloemhof descended into chaos.

Mokgoro's state vehicle was stoned and damaged and he was rushed out in a police Nyala.

North West Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) spokesperson, Tumeloentle Thiba, told SABC the commission remains concerned over the protests in the run-up to next month's elections and has identified about 79 hotspots.

OFM News previously reported that Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Police expressed its confidence in the South African Police Service’s state of readiness for the upcoming general elections.

In a report the committee states that arrangements for security on election day have been made and that all final preparations would be completed by the end of April. It confirmed that there will be security measures at all the 22 925 voting stations countrywide.

The committee’s chairperson, Francois Beukman, has also committed to ensure that security is beefed up and that all roleplayers, such as the SANDF, are roped in should the need arise.

To further reduce absenteeism of police officers during elections, the committee said SAPS officers will vote during the special votes to take place on May 6 and 7.
