Towns such as Brits and Bloemhof in the North West have received special attention from the government's Security Cluster as potential hotspots during the upcoming 8 May 2019 general election.

Police minister, Bheki Cele, says this follows after a series of violent protests in Bloemhof and Brits. He says the national government has already deployed state security machinery and officers to look into stabilising the situation in these areas.

OFM News previously reported that premier Job Mokgoro and his team of MEC's had to be whisked away by police as a community meeting looking into alleged gangsterism in Bloemhof descended into chaos while on Monday and Tuesday a march by irate residents in Oukasie in Brits quickly turned violent and resulted in the arrest of at least 52 suspects. Cele adds that out of 56 000 officers to deploy from 6 to 8 May, during the day of the election many of them will be sent to these hotspots.

Mokgoro's state vehicle was stoned and damaged during a community meeting and he was rushed out in a police Nyala in Bloemhof in March. Angry residents want the government to intervene. Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission launched its national Results Operations Centre in Pretoria earlier this week.
