#OFMElectionWatch: NW IEC organises tent for voters after residents set school alight | News Article

Stringent measures have been put in place by the IEC in the North West after a school, used as an IEC voting station, was set alight by irate protesting residents last week in Kraaipan Village in the Ratlou Municipality.

IEC provincial manager, Tumelontle Thiba, says they have since erected a tent near the school to accommodate voters in that area.

The incident comes as residents in the most remote areas of the province threaten to withhold their votes and disrupt the national election over issues of service delivery.

Thiba previously told OFM News that despite special votes having proceeded smoothly as planned in Mahikeng and other surrounding areas, three schools in Tshaneng near Ganyesa, earmarked as IEC centres for the election, were shut down by angry residents.

Thiba says despite this the IEC in the province is well prepared and ready to deal with any challenges that may arise on the day of elections.

The province has been plagued by violent service delivery protests ahead of Wednesday’s elections.

Tshaneng, Eckron and Katlerelo Primary Schools in the Kagisano Molopo Local Municipality in the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District have all been affected. This, as protesting residents of Tshaneng near the area request that the mayor of the municipality come and address them on issues of service delivery.

Thiba says Tshaneng opened late as a result of the protests while Eckron and Katlarelo did not open its doors for voting purposes.

OFM News previously reported that Brits and Bloemhof received special attention from the government's Security Cluster as potential hotspots during the upcoming election.
