#OFMElectionWatch: Coligny residents positive ahead of elections | News Article

With only two days to go before South Africa’s national elections, Coligny residents in the North West refuse to let the recent violent protests and racial tension sparked by the killing of Matlhomola Mosweu deter their good election spirit.

Residents repeatedly shied away from commenting on protests that plagued the town since 2016, when probed. One of them, Goodman Langa, says all is well in the area following Mosweu’s much-publicised death. Langa notes that service delivery is slow in Coligny but he can see the Ditsobotla Local Municipality’s efforts to serve the people. Elise de Villiers echoes Langa’s sentiments, adding that she is far more perturbed by the state of the North West as a whole, rather than the state of Coligny specifically.

De Villiers says she will be voting on May 8 and hopes everyone will take to the polls as well so that there can be some change. She is concerned by the conditions of the roads in the province, as well as some of the municipalities that have been placed under administration by premier Job Mokgoro in late 2018.

Ditsobotla, which includes the towns of Coligny and Lichtenburg, was named as one of the eight municipalities placed under provincial care by Mokgoro in August 2018. The others are Kagisano-Molopo, Ramotshere Moiloa, Kgetlengrivier, Maquassi Hills, Naledi, and Mahikeng Local Municipalities.
