#OFMElectionWatch: Six arrested in NW for contravening Electoral Act | News Article

Six people were arrested in Ganyesa following the torching of an IEC vehicle and shutting down three schools in Tshaneng on Monday.

They will face two charges including malicious damage to property and contravening the Electoral Act.

Police spokesperson, Sabata Mokgwabone, tells OFM News that the suspects were arrested in Ganyesa following protests.

OFM News previously reported the IEC provincial manager, Tumelontle Thiba, said three primary schools in that area, Tshaneng, Eckron and Katlerelo, which were earmarked as IEC centres for the election, were shut down by angry residents.

Mokgwabone had pleaded with the members of the public not to hinder any IEC processes while protesting because the police will act swiftly and arrest those found to be on the wrong side of the law.

He says the police are still investigating the matter but did not specify as to when the suspects will appear in court.

On Monday, Thiba said stringent measures have been put in place by the IEC in the province after a school, used as an IEC voting station, was set alight by irate protesting residents last week in the Kraaipan Village in the Ratlou Municipality.

She said they have since put up a tent near the school to accommodate voters in that area.

The incident comes as residents in the most remote areas of the province threaten to withhold their votes and disrupt the national election over issues of service delivery.
