Over 50 new police vehicles have been handed over by the National Police Commissioner, Khehla Sitole, during a parade in Mahikeng ahead of tomorrow’s elections.

Sitole is in the North West to assess the state of readiness before Wednesday’s general election after the province was declared a hotspot.

He was flanked by the MEC for Community Safety in the province, Mpho Motlhabane, and the Independent Electoral Commission's (IEC) provincial manager, Tumelontle Thiba, amongst others.

He says that the fleet will be used during the election to make sure that stability, law, and order are maintained in the province. More than 56 000 officials were also deployed in the country.

OFM News has reported that just two days before the elections two incidents have been reported where an IEC vehicle was partially torched and three schools, earmarked as voting stations, were shut down.

The province was tipped as a hotspot, along with KwaZulu-Natal by police minister, Bheki Cele, last week after sporadic violent protests in Bloemhof where premier Job Mokgoro was chased away during a meeting.

Police spokesperson, Sabata Mokgwabone, told OFM News that six people who were arrested in Ganyesa following the torching of an IEC vehicle and shutting down of three schools in Tshaneng on Monday will face two charges including malicious damage to property and contravening the Electoral Act. Mokgwabone says the suspects were arrested in Ganyesa following protests.
