#Election2019: Wait almost over for FS voters | News Article

The wait is almost over as more than 1.4 million registered voters in the Free State prepare to go to polls this morning.

The IEC in the province has confirmed to OFM News that all 1 529 voting stations across the province are expected to open at 7am. The IEC's spokesperson in the province, Mmabatho Rasengane, said special votes have over the past two days run smoothly and they are anticipating the general elections to proceed well today.

There has, however, been incidents that have already raised concerns in the province. This, after a community hall set to be a voting station in Viljoenskroon and a clinic were torched yesterday. Rasengane says more than 100 police officers and 50 members of the SANDF have been trained in the province as part of their contingency plans, and security measures across towns where there have been sporadic protests have been beefed up.

She further confirmed that elections in towns such as Viljoenskroon, Marquard and Kroonstad, where there have been sporadic protests, are being monitored closely. The police have arrested about 24 people who were allegedly involved in the torching of the community hall and are expected to appear in court the day after the elections.

Police spokesperson in the province, Motantsi Makhele, told OFM News that all SAPS members are on the ground and the situation in Viljoenskroon has returned to normal.
