NC police on guard following threats from illegal miners in Kleinsee

NC police on guard following threats from illegal miners in Kleinsee | News Article

The Provincial Police Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Risimati Peter Shivuri, has told OFM News there is a high police contingency in the village of Kleinsee.

Namaqualand’s illegal miners earlier indicated that they would disrupt voting stations in the town while they have also indicated that they will not be voting.

OFM News’ correspondent, Roderick Titus, reports Shivuri is in the town where illegal diamond miners are demanding that the local government in the area either allow them to mine illegally as they have been or provide them with licences to mine legally.

Kleinsee is on the coast of the province, about 77 kilometres from Port Nolloth, and is a town riddled with unemployment. It has been suggested it fuels the high rate of illegal mining in the area.

Speaking to OFM News on other developments on policing in the province during today’s elections, Shivuri also applauded political parties in the province for their cooperation with the police and the affected communities as well. “We are working together as a team and that makes me happy. It shows that members of the community respect the law,” he further said.
