#OFMElectionWatch: 21 nabbed for special vote violence in NW court | News Article

The twenty one people arrested for allegedly torching an Electoral Commission presiding officer’s car and disrupting special voting in Ganyesa, North West, earlier this week, will appear in the Local Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

The list of suspects in the incident, which occurred on Monday in Mmadinonyane, is made up of ten women and eleven men. Police spokesperson, Sabata Mokgwabone, told OFM News previously the group is facing charges related to the contravention of the Electoral Act, malicious damage to property and robbery.

It is believed the presiding officer and another official were driving separately in their vehicles, one of which was loaded with IEC voting material. They were stopped and ambushed by members of the community, who robbed the pair of their cellphones before setting the two vehicles alight.

Following the unrest, members of the South African Defence Force, along with additional police members, were deployed to Ganyesa to ensure that elections continued without disruption.

The deployment of  5000 police officials in North West in addition to other measures in place appear to have yielded results with no major disruptions being reported by police on Election Day, in contrast to the special voting period.
