The ANC in the North West is concerned by the low voter turnout in the province, despite leading by over 60 percent in the polls with a quarter of the votes in the province already counted.

The Coordinator of the ANC’s provincial task team and current Minister of Science and Technology, Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane, acknowledges voter turnout figures fell when compared to the 2014 general election figures, due to the rainfall experienced in the province on Election Day. Kubayi-Ngubane goes on to admit that frustrations over service delivery and the ongoing political uncertainty in the North West also affected the number of supporters that took to the polls. The party is, however, confident that they will continue to lead at the polls and will have a better picture of their position in the province around midday when 50 percent of the votes have been counted.

“We will continue to be the leading party in the province because we’ve been able to do a lot of work. It doesn’t come easy. We’ve gone across the province, village by village, engaging with our voters and we’ve been given a clear message. They are giving us another opportunity to lead again, but there are things they want us to fix,” says Kubayi-Ngubani.

Her comments come as 21 people arrested for allegedly torching an Electoral Commission presiding officer’s car and disrupting special voting in Ganyesa, North West, earlier this week will appear in the Local Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. The list of suspects in the incident - which occurred on Monday May 6 in Mmadinonyane - is made up of ten women and eleven men, all between the ages of 17 and 41. Police spokesperson, Sabata Mokgwabone, told OFM News previously the group is facing charges related to the contravention of the Electoral Act, malicious damage to property and robbery.

Meanwhile, the EFF is poised to be the official opposition in the province, just ahead of the DA in the morning’s statistics. The Freedom Front Plus is also not far behind, showing indeed the party has seen growth in supporters.
