System jam delays NC results | News Article

A technical glitch in the vote counting process has delayed the release of the IEC in the Northern Cape's results.

This is according to the commission in the province's Maruping Wildebees, who told OFM News that the system jammed, which delayed the receiving of votes from the Joe Morolong Local Municipality. By 8pm last night the centre had still not received counted votes from more than 50 of its voting stations in that municipality. The commission expects to complete all vote counting before midday today.

Wildebees said the system jam led to the IEC teams halting the vote counting process altogether with the hopes that it would function again overnight. Counting resumed again this morning and according to figures provided, the IEC in the province has received results from 689 voting stations, with 18 more outstanding. Wildebees said they hope to complete this process by 10 this morning, following which they will then make an announcement on these results.

As it stands, the ANC in the province leads with 58% of the votes received as 222 790 votes were counted in favour of it. The Democratic Alliance comes after the ANC, as it received 100 737 votes in the province, which translates to 24,7% of votes received. Finally, in third place is the Economic Freedom Fighters party, which is the third largest party in the province, with 37 227 votes counted thus far, which translates to 9,6% of all votes counted so far. So far, 97,7% of all voting stations have been counted in the province, with the IEC reporting that 66,8% of the registered voters turned up at voting stations and only 1,5% of votes counted were spoilt votes.
