ANC NC retains province, despite low voter turnout | News Article

The ANC in the Northern Cape will remain the ruling party in the province after the Independent Electoral Commission in Kimberley earlier announced that the party received the bulk of the votes which were counted in the general elections on Wednesday

Of the 396 679 valid votes which were cast at the 707 voting stations across the province, the party received 228 265 votes. OFM News' Pulane Choane reports that the ruling party beat its closest competitor, being the Democratic Alliance by over 120 000 votes.

The Democratic Alliance in the province received 101 198 votes, and received 25,71% of the votes. As per the final figures provided by the IEC in Kimberley after vote counting was finalized earlier today, these numbers prove that the number of votes the ANC has received in these elections has dropped as compared to the 2014 elections where they won with 64% majority vote. The DA and the EFF in the province on the other hand, grew their voter percentages in these elections as the DA received 25,51% of the votes received compared to the 23,89% they received in 2014. This growth by the party is despite the low voter turnout as only 64% of the 626 471 that were registered to vote took to the voting stations.

The EFF in the province also showed a substantial growth in the number of votes it received, despite the threat of new entrants such as Patricia de Lille's GOOD party and Mzwanele Manyi's African Transformation Movement (ATM). The red berets in the province grew by over 5% as they this year received 38 527 votes, which made up 9, 71% of the total number of valid votes received compared to in 2014 where they received 20 951 votes, which made up 4,96% of the total votes received that year.

These results were announced at the IEC's operations centre in Kimberley earlier after a technical glitch delayed vote counting teams by 8 hours yesterday, forcing them to continue the process again today. The ANC in the province at a media briefing held on Friday at the Francis Baard Municipal offices in Kimberley expressed it's joy at winning these elections both provincially and nationally and said it would soon be meeting with its higher structures on who now among its provincial leaders will become the Premier, speaker for the provincial legislature and form part of its executive committee.
