FS IEC rubbishes allegations of marked ballots dumped in Welkom | News Article

The IEC in the Free State refutes allegations that there was a ballot box dumped at one of the voting stations in Welkom.

The Provincial Electorate Officer, Jabulani Tshabalala, says investigations indicate that the box contained unused material and does not affect the outcome of the elections in any way. He says they have noted all concerns brought forth by opposition parties and members of the public regarding these elections, and stands resolute that they were free and fair.

These concerns, amongst others, included the alleged shortage of ballot papers, scanners, power outages, protests and the dumped box. Tshabalala says they have investigated all allegations reported and that some of them are without substance. He says they resorted to planned contingency measures where there was a need and elections proceeded very well. He adds that there was no shortage of ballot papers as the province had a low voter turnout, coupled with buffer stock.

“We had four times more than we needed. All voting stations had more than enough ballots papers. There were no stations closed early due to shortages,” added IEC Provincial Manager, Itumeleng Liba.

The electorate says they have thus far finalised capturing results at 1295 voting stations of a total of 1529.

They further confirmed that the Free State had a total of 623 212 votes casted and that they are all legitimate. Tshabalala and Liba highlighted that all went smoothly and are nearing the end of counting votes.
