#CoronavirusNW: New forensic pathology centre launched | News Article

The North West province looks set to bolster its fight against the rapid spread of the novel coronavirus by launching a Forensic Pathology Center in the province.

The Deputy Minister of Health Joe Phaahla, Premier Job Mokgoro, Health MEC Madoda Sambatha, and other members of the Executive Council will officially open this centre on Thursday.

This as the rate of new infections and active cases of Covid-19 in the province have passed the 250-mark to 254, as announced on Wednesday night. While the source of new infections is not being explained, the mining sector might be at the centre with more miners testing positive for Covid-19. Premier Mokgoro in a statement says the Forensic Pathology Center comes at the right time as the province is putting in place all the necessary infrastructure resources to manage Covid-19.

So far 59 patients from a total of 314 infected people in the province are said to have recovered from this global pandemic while only one person passed on. The centre is located at the epicentre of the virus in the North West, namely the Bojanala District which includes Rustenburg.

OFM News previously reported that MEC Sambatha announced cases of Covid-19 in the province started to increase following the outbreak and spreading of the virus in the mining sector, which at the time had 75 confirmed cases. This as the province announced that five miners from the  Eastern Cape and one from Gauteng, who travelled back to the province's Impala Mine to resume their work, tested positive for Covid-19.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize on Wednesday night announced that 37 525 people have been confirmed positive for the virus. Mkhize also announced that a total number of 792 patients have now passed away from Covid-19 and 19 682 patients have thus far recovered.
