At least 1000 more nurses and 92 social workers have been employed in the Free State with the sole intention of bolstering the province's fight against the coronavirus (Covid-19).

This was revealed by Premier Sisi Ntombela on Friday, following a visit to the province by the Deputy President, David Mabuza, and Deputy Minister of Health, Joe Phaahla.

Ntombela says she hopes that these additions will strengthen the measures currently in place to stem the spread of Covid-19, which has so far killed 9 patients in the province.

Mabuza and Phaahla addressed Ntombela and her executive council at the Central University of Technology (CUT) in Bloemfontein. Both praised the province 's effort in the fight against the virus. So far the province has about 204 active cases after 123 recoveries, 9 deaths recorded from 336 reported cases.

"Our task is not easy at all, and it is about to get even worse with more infections and deaths projected. Our task as the provincial government is to curb the spread of the virus, and in the process, prevent more deaths," Ntombela adds.

She further adds that while the deaths of Covid-19 patients in the province pales in comparison to other provinces, 9 deaths are too many.

"The lives of our people are too precious and we must jealously protect them. We once again urge them to continue observing the regulations because, in the absence of a vaccine, this is the only way we are going to emerge victorious in this battle," Ntombela said.

Meanwhile, Health Minister, Zweli Mkhize, on Wednesday night announced that 43 434 people have been confirmed positive for the virus. Mkhize also announced that a total number of 908 patients have now passed away from Covid-19 and 23 088 patients have thus far recovered.

The National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) also last night revealed that a total of 30 196 Covid19 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours (5 Jun). The institute further adds that there are 2 643 new cases of the virus across the country and new 60 related Covid-19 deaths.
