Unrest in Vaal over electricity─── 13:11 Sat, 06 Jun 2020
Various communities in the Vaal Triangle have blockaded the streets, after they claimed to have been without electricity since the beginning of the national lockdown to curb the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19).
Responding to these claims, Emfuleni Mayoral spokesperson Lebo Mofokeng says electricity supply was discontinued after transformers overloaded and burned out due to illegal connections.
However, the municipality has vowed to procure new transformers and will work with the national power utility Eskom to find a lasting solution.
Mofokeng urged community members to stop pelting stones at Eskom and municipal teams, who must conduct electricity metre audits with the intention to ease the unnecessary load that is caused by illegal connections.
