Following an attack on an alleged criminal, the police in North West appeal to communities to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and urge them to report crime to the police.

This, after a 23-year-old man who is alleged to have murdered his girlfriend was attacked by two men in Taung. Police spokesperson, Amanda Funani, says the 23-year-old is currently under police guard in hospital after being assaulted by the two men who allegedly saw him stabbing a 30-year-old woman at a tavern in the Lokaleng Village, Taung.

Funani says according to reports, the 23-year-old suspect stabbed the woman with a knife in the neck and the victim died while being transported to hospital.

"The suspect was also taken to hospital after being assaulted by two males who saw him stabbing the victim. The motive of the incident is unknown at this stage and investigation into the matter continues," she said.

The 23-year-old is expected to soon appear in the Taung Magistrates' Court on a charge of murder.

Meanwhile, the Police Provincial Commissioner, Sello Kwena, has condemned the incident which occurred within the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children.
