Alleged murderer due in court | News Article

A 23-year-old man accused of brutally killing his 30-year-old girlfriend in Taung in the North West will on Tuesday make his first court appearance in the Taung Magistrate's Court.

Police spokesperson, Amanda Funani, says the suspect has been discharged from a local hospital after he was seriously injured after being attacked by two men who reacted to his crime. The suspect is alleged to have stabbed the woman at a local tavern in the Lokaleng village. The victim, who has been identified as Thando Velabayi, was stabbed in the neck with a knife and died on her way to the hospital.

Meanwhile, a large crowd is expected to protest outside the court against the suspect during his first appearance on Tuesday.

The Founder and Chairperson of the Taung Men Against Gender-based Violence and Femicide Forum, Tebogo Mokgejane, has expressed shock and dismay after the brutal killing of Velabayi on Friday night.

The murder comes as South Africans are still observing the 16 Days of Activism of No Violence Against Women and Children campaign.

“This is heart-breaking. We have allowed gender-based violence to become the norm in our rural communities and that must change now. Women, young girls and children cannot continue to live in constant fear of being attacked and violated. Women must live free and should not have to protect themselves from men,” says Mokgejane.
