Calls for judiciary to take #GBV serious | News Article
Mannehileng Letuka from PPF FS

The civil rights group movement Progressive Professional’s Forum (PPF) has welcomed the latest development in the case of the state versus Mackenzie Ratselane, who is accused of brutally stabbing his wife, an SABC presenter in the Free State.

The forum's Mannehileng Letuka has expressed satisfaction with further charges of assault being added to the list of those he already faces, which include attempted murder and kidnapping, amongst others. She says it is clear that Mackenzie intended to kill the SABC news presenter, Dimakatso Ratselane, when he stabbed her multiple times. Letuka says she believes that with Dimakatso surviving the attack of her estranged husband, this would make the case against Mackenzie strong and easy for the state.

“We want to see our judiciary system attending to the cases of gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide as urgent as possible because it will send a very powerful message out there to people who continue to perpetuate this kind of behaviour of killing our women and girls and everyone who is affected by GBV,” she adds.

Mannehileng says they will be waiting with great anticipation for the next court appearance of Mackenzie. He is expected to appear in the regional court on 15 April after his case was transferred in his absentia on Wednesday 24 March. This after he failed to pitch in court for the second day in a row due to a possible Covid-19 case where he is being held in custody.

Mackenzie was arrested in Ennerdale in Gauteng last week. His arrest came after Dimakatso was found lying in a pool of blood with multiple stab wounds in Bloemfontein. Mackenzie and Dimakatso are said to have quarrelled on their way to fetch their children in Phase 2. She was later found by friends and residents in the Dinaweng area near a popular tavern.
