FS Legislature weighs in on rising unemployment, #GBV | News Article

Issues of gender-based violence (GBV) and high unemployment urgently needs to be addressed.

According to the Speaker of the Free State Legislature, Zanele Sifuba, these are among the concerns sharply raised by women gathered in Welkom. Speaking to OFM News, as the Provincial Legislature hosts a women's dialogue, Sifuba confirmed more must be done to address the plight faced by women in the province. Her statement comes as the month of August, commonly known as Women's Month, draws to an end.

Sifuba's interview with OFM News comes less than a week after the Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS), released by Stats SA indicated that the unemployment rate has increased to 34.4% from 32.6% in the first three months of the year.

Statistician-General, Risenga Maluleke, indicated that the youth and women are the hardest hit.

The Eastern Cape recorded the highest official and expanded unemployment rates, followed by the Free State at 36.5% and 45.2% expanded unemployment.

Whilst Sifuba has acknowledged that unemployment among women is a global issue, she vowed to ensure that the Provincial Legislature in it's oversight role hold the Executive accountable and ensure that spheres of government uphold policies regarding women and youth employment.
