#Elections2021: Over 600 000 NC voters expected | News Article

Approximately 623 000 registered voters in the Northern Cape are expected to cast their votes during the Local Government Elections on Monday at one of the hundreds of voting stations managed by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

The provincial IEC spokesperson, Elken Topken, says there are 728 voting stations across the province, stretching from Port Nolloth, down to Sutherland, Colesburg and up to Heuningvlei.

Meanwhile, the IEC's national headquarters has previously declared its state of readiness. The electoral commission said over 1.7 million voters had registered nationally during the special two-day registration weekend which took place from 18 to 19 September 2021.

"This registration yield is inclusive of new registrations, as well as voters correcting their registration details. Innovations introduced by the voter management device have increased the speed at which voter registration applications are processed," the IEC added.

OFM News previously reported that the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) is on Saturday expected to deploy thousands of soldiers onto the streets of cities, towns and small villages across the country.

A portion of the 10 000 soldiers will be deployed to cities such as Bloemfontein, Kimberley and Mahikeng, among others. These three cities in the Free State, Northern Cape and the North West have in the past experienced violent protests with irate residents displaying their anger with municipalities based in these towns over a lack of basic service delivery.

The SANDF spokesperson, Mafi Mgobozi, said in a statement that the deployment of soldiers is to support the law enforcement agencies in order to safeguard the upcoming municipal elections which will kick-start on Monday.
