The ANC Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) in the Northern Cape has denied the projection done by the market-research company Ipsos and analysts, that its support base drop down to at least 30% to 40% during the 2021 municipal elections.

The Provincial secretary, Deshi Ngxanga, says the analysis done by many analysts on the decline of the party in many municipalities lacks fundamental scientific reflection. He instead says the ANC in the Northern Cape, especially in municipalities such as the Kimberlely-based Sol Plaatje Municipality, will see improved results.

"We are seeing an improvement in how municipalities spend their monies. We are engaging on a regular basis with all the councillors across the length and breath of the province. And we are insisting that money meant for service delivery, in particular infrastructure, should be used and we have seen an improvement. In fact, we have seen a reduction in irregular expenditure and fruitless expenditure," he adds.

Ngxanga's optimism is despite the party having faced a barrage of criticism from residents across the province over a lack of service delivery, which include water and sanitation, amongst others.

The PEC is the only formal structure standing in the three central South African provinces, compared to the neighbouring provinces of North West and the Free State. This as the province is now under the leadership of the Interim Provincial Committee (IPC), following serious political challenges.

The North West PEC, which was led by former premier Supra Mahumapelo, was dissolved in 2018 following the resignation of Mahumapelo as the premier after sporadic violent protests over a lack of service delivery. In the Free State, the Bloemfontein-based Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) this year made an adverse order against the PEC, led by the axed Transport MEC, Sam Mashinini.

Meanwhile, OFM News previously reported that almost ten voting stations in the Northern Cape failed to open on time Monday morning - the day of the 2021 Local Government Elections.

IEC Provincial Manager, Bonolo Modise said some of the voting material was delivered very late but that was soon sorted and those stations are now up and running to allow voters to cast their votes.

Modise said except for these minor delays, nothing major has so far been reported and he hopes that come 21:00, when the IEC closes their voting stations, all would have gone well and smooth. At least 623 000 registered voters are expected to vote across 728 voting stations in the province.
