The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union's (AMCU) regional chairperson, Zenzo Xalaba, confirms to OFM News that a worker died on Tuesday. He says this happened after a suspected blast that led to the dislodging of a rock that badly hit a deceased worker and injured four of his colleagues during the incident.

He says the deceased went missing after a blast and he was found dead in a panel. Xalaba says it seems that there was a system failure in charging up the panel. 

Meanwhile, OFM News previously reported that three mineworkers died and two were rescued at a North West Impala Platinum mine following a mud rush incident at its Rustenburg Shaft 6 on Sunday.

“The rocks dislodged from the phase of the panel and it hit the other employee badly and four other colleagues couldn’t notice where he was and then they went out but they realised that there was one missing. So they went back and they found him lying inside the panel, already dead.

The four injured workers were sent to a private hospital in Welkom for medical attention.

The mining operations at Impala Platinum’s shaft 6 in Rustenburg were suspended on Tuesday following the retrieval of the mineworkers who were trapped underground after a mud-rush incident at the weekend.
