Over 774 000 South Africans to cast special votes next week | News Article

At least 774 094 South Africans have been granted permission to cast special votes on May 6 and 7 in the country's general election, the Independent Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) said on Tuesday.

"This is almost double the number of special voters in 2014 (393 516) and is close to the number of special voters in 2009 (743 609)," the commission said in a statement.

At least 452 418 of the special votes will be cast during home visits by election officials accompanied by party agents and observers.

The Eastern Cape has the highest number of home visits, at 85 252 voters. The highest number of special votes at voting stations is in Gauteng at 71 921.

Permission for home visits is granted to those who cannot visit a voting station due to physically infirmity, disability and pregnancy.

The remaining 321 676 voters will cast their special votes at their voting stations.

The IEC on Tuesday officially opened its results operations centre, a national elections nerve centre at the Pretoria Show Grounds.

The centre houses IEC operations, representatives of the 48 political parties contesting the elections, domestic and international observer missions and members of the media.

The national centre is complemented by nine provincial results centres from where the provincial election results will be monitored.
