Communities urged to report #GBV | News Article

Three key bills related to gender-based violence (GBV) and abuse have been tabled in parliament to address the scourge of violence against women.

This is according to President Cyril Ramaphosa. Ramaphosa announced that apart from the R1.6 billion Emergency Response Action Plan provided to combat GBV and femicide, the bills are designed to fill the gaps that allow some perpetrators to evade justice.

This comes after public calls to action following a series of brutal murders and attacks on women and children over the past few months.

The announcement also comes at the time when communities in the Free State are still reeling from the horrific death a 21-month-old baby, Bokamoso Blessing Mpembe, who was murdered in Petrus Steyn last week.

Baby Bokamoso was allegedly abducted and killed by her mother's former lover. She went missing on August 30, after her mother went to neighbours to seek help after allegedly being assaulted by her ex-boyfriend.

Upon her return, she discovered that her baby was missing along with her ex-boyfriend. Bokamoso's body was discovered days later on September 3 in bushes on a nearby farm, not far from where the ex-boyfriend had committed suicide.

Premier Sisi Ntombela, who is also the Deputy President of the ANC Women's League, has since condemned the incident and called on communities to report any cases of abuse against women and children.
