A warrant of arrest was issued for Windy Judas Mahlangu after the 46-year-old failed to appear in the Wolmaransstad Magistrate's Court.

"Mahlangu was first arrested by the National Traffic Anti-corruption Unit in July this year on allegations of impersonating a traffic officer and defeating the ends of justice. He was re-arrested in September after investigations revealed that he was involved in more acts of alleged criminality," said RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane.

Mahlangu was released on R5 000 bail.

It was alleged that he had worked with truck owner Kobus Jordaan, 49, to defraud the municipality of R540 000 in unpaid licence discs and traffic fines.

He allegedly issued fraudulent licence discs for Jordaan’s 39 trucks and allegedly ensured that Jordaan did not pay traffic fines for all of his trucks.

Jordaan is also out on bail.

Mahlangu's case has since been postponed to November 16.

On the same day, another official who was responsible for vehicle examinations was expected to appear.

The official is facing fraud and corruption charges after it was found that he issued roadworthy certificates for vehicles that he had not examined. It is alleged that he demanded a bribe of R1 500 for certificates.

The RTMC has been clamping down on traffic officials who have allegedly been involved in fraudulent activity.

According to Zwane, several other officials are scheduled to appear in various courts in October.

Four of them are vehicle examiners from Northam in Limpopo, seven are from Rustenburg in the North West, one from Vryburg and another is from the Emfuleni municipality in Sedibeng.

The RTMC's CEO, Makhosini Msibi has warned that traffic officials found guilty of corruption will not be shown any mercy.
