Agri podcast: Sector needs continuous support - Agri SA | News Article

President Cyril Ramaphosa arguably presented his most fundamental State of the Nation Address considering the intrusion of the global Covid-19 pandemic.

Agri SA’s executive director, Christo van der Rheede, tells OFM News that South Africa is not policy bankrupt but that remains challenged by the affectivity and efficiency in the implementation of policies. This, in conjunction with the president’s four-point focus plan. Van Der Rheede says that agriculture and the value chain remain critical players as contributors to the GDP and should continually receive support. Van der Rheede further says the newly announced national minimum wage will have a detrimental impact on the provision of jobs.

Free State Premier Sisi Ntombela and her team visited an agricultural empowerment project for women from rural areas in the province. The training is taking place on a farm in Tweeling. The department’s spokesperson, Sello Pietersen says the women being trained are women who have been empowered through the Progressive Women’s Movement South Africa and the United Nations Development Programme to assist them in becoming self-sustainable contributors to the agricultural economy. Pietersen says that these programmes will take place across the province for those women who seek to equip themselves for the betterment of their and their families’ lives.
