Grazing land within the Free State is limited because of repeated veld fires across the province. According to the Commercial Manager of Free State Agriculture, Dr Jack Armour, given the additional feed shortage in drought-stricken areas, the grass and lucerne supply is extremely limited. He says that the official veld fire figures, until the end of July, show that 340 000 hectares of veld have already been destroyed. If the August veld fires in the Boshof and Dealesville area, and the veld fires from the beginning of September are added, more than 400 000 hectares of veld have been destroyed. Free State Agriculture has launched an initiative to purchase feed from other provinces and supply it to the affected areas. Given the cost of this project, the organisation also needs the support of the community and business sector. Free State Agriculture, therefore, appeals to businesses or farmers who have feed available for sale, or who can donate feed and transport, to contact the organisation.

South Africa's agricultural economy is in good shape. This was confirmed by the second-quarter GDP data released by Statistics South Africa. The chief economist at the Agricultural Business Chamber of South Africa (Agbiz), Wandile Sihlobo, adds that after contracting by 1,0% quarter-on-quarter in the first quarter of this year, the agricultural gross value added to the GDP expanded by 6,2% in the second quarter. According to Sihlobo, this improvement is supported by increased production of field crops, horticulture, and relatively better production conditions within the livestock sub-sector.
