The National Department of Agriculture has embarked on roadshows and an awareness campaign in North West and the Free State to meet with pork farmers following outbreaks of African swine fever (ASF) in the two provinces.

This comes after control measures have already been put in place in both provinces following reports of outbreaks in Gauteng and Mpumalanga. The director of veterinary services at the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in the Free State, Kristan Mojapelo, says the virus initially broke out on a Free State farm at Heilbron with another outbreak which was reported at Koppies. The campaign is held in collaboration with the South African Pork Producers Association (SAPPO). It aims at educating farmers on the prevention, transmission and spread of the disease.

This campaign has already taken place in Bloemfontein, Springfontein and Fouriesmith in the Free State with the next session on 15 July in Rustenburg, North West. The next sessions will be from 16 to 18 July in Klerksdorp, Taung, Vryburg and Zeerust. It will be followed by sessions in the Thabo Mofutsanyane district from 22 July to 25 July in Vrede and Memel, Harrismith and Warden, Qwaqwa and Fouriesburg, and Ficksburg and Ladybrand.
