William Bulwane MEC of Agriculture in the Free State

The MEC of Agriculture and Rural Development in the Free State is still convinced that agriculture offers the best hope for economic growth in South Africa.

This despite the industry’s poor contribution to the country’s second-quarter GDP which grew by 3.1%. Agriculture declined by 4.2%. Bulwane told OFM News on Monday the department welcomes National Treasury's new policy document to boost economic growth in the country. This document was released last week. Bulwane is of the opinion that South Africa’s economy can be boosted by the agricultural industry’s stable economy which can grow more by innovations and the fourth industrial revolution.  He says that is why expropriation of land needs to be implemented in order to allow all South Africans have access to land. The department’s focus is also ensuring more black farmers have access to mainstream production. These farmers must be supported by the department and produce on a commercial level. This is an effort to ensure that not only white commercial farmers produce products.

Bulwane added the second process entails the department's responsibility to ensure that the original beneficiaries of the controversial Vrede Dairy Project are identified. He said the department has set a target to identify and hand over the project to the rightful beneficiaries by January next year. A team from the department is at the farm in an effort to maintain the dairy.
