Agri Eastern Cape: Government slow to provide relief in crippling drought─── CHRISTAL-LIZE MULLER 06:31 Wed, 16 Oct 2019
The crippling drought in some areas in the Eastern Cape has continued for five years now and farmers are literally begging for food for themselves, let alone for their animals.
Vice President of Agri Eastern Cape, Peter Cloete , says it is an absolute crisis in the province, while drought assistance from the government is slow and not sufficient. He is of the opinion that government’s reluctance in this regard is due to capacity issues by the relevant departments. OFM News' Christal-Lize also asked Cloete about the uncertainty among farmers regarding the amendment of the Constitution, especially Article 25, allowing expropriation of land without compensation. He believes most farmers are on the back foot and nervous about the amendment.
Cloete, however, adds that nobody believes it will happen because it will result in the collapse of the entire country.
