More Limpopo farms affected by FMD

More Limpopo farms affected by FMD | News Article

The recent outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) among cattle on a commercial farm in the Molemole district in Limpopo is no longer limited to just one farm.

Four farms, of which most are feedlots, are affected. All indications are that the likely origin of infected cattle is an auction in the district. The National Department of Agriculture's technical spokesperson, Dr Bothlhe Modisane, says the fact that more than one farm is involved, shows the seriousness of the situation. He says the department's intention with the announcement to temporarily suspend livestock auctions in Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Gauteng, and North West is to prevent the spread of the disease because it is feared that auctioned animals may transmit this disease to other areas in the country.

He says the outcome of a technical committee dealing with the temporary moratorium that has been placed on live auctions in the four provinces, concluded on Monday that the temporary suspension still stands.
