What's new in Farmer's Weekly? | News Article

In our Friday insert, only on OFM News' Agri Hour, Christal-Lize Muller speaks to the editor of Farmer’s Weekly, Denine Erasmus, about the latest news in the agricultural industry covered in the magazine and on its website...

She highlights the July 17 issue looking at fresh produce markets after the Tshwane market near Pretoria recently had to close due to a case of Covid-19 which was confirmed in one of the workers at the market. The RSA Group, which is one of the agents working at the market, responded quickly by setting up a private fresh produce market so that trading can continue for farmers and traders using the Tshwane market.

In another news story the DA is calling for a parliamentary debate on rural violence and farm attacks, following an increase in these attacks in the last few weeks and months. Farmer's organisations really asking some indication from pres. Cyril Ramaphosa and government to acknowledged the problem and pay urgent attention and intervene, especially by high levels in government.

She says in the news section the magazine focuses on the start of the veld fire season in the Free State and central parts of the country. Farmers are being urged to put precautionary measures in place and be prepared as the veld fire season is getting into full swing.

In another article the focus is on the Cape Town Harbour where problems continue with backlogs and ships struggling to port due to bad weather. With a cold front approaching the Western Cape this weekend, the situation can worsen. However, information received indicates workers from the Durban Harbour will be sent to Cape Town to help out and make sure this harbour gets back up to date with deliveries among others.

The feature section of the magazine focuses on the debate about the live export of sheep from South Africa. This comes after there have been two shipments already from the Eastern Cape to the Middle East, but there has been huge controversy about it.

There is also a feature about a thriving olive oil business in Gauteng.
