Unpacking the impact of stress with MNI: Stress and the immune system─── 09:23 Wed, 20 Oct 2021
In today’s episode of “Unpacking the impact of stress with MNI”, Yolanda Maartens speaks to Sanja van Wyk, product specialist at the Medical Nutritional Institute, about how stress can negatively affect one’s physical and mental health.
Adults who experience excessive stress are at risk of developing chronic diseases, including obesity, heart disease, diabetes, anxiety, and depression.
Stress also suppresses the immune system and makes us susceptible to infections. One of the most important functions of the stress hormone cortisol is to activate the immune system and reduce inflammation in the body. This is beneficial in the short-term but over long periods of time, it results in exhaustion of the immune system making us more susceptible to infections and harmful viruses, so it is easier to get sick and harder to fight off bugs.
