This is according to the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.
The department said, in an answer to a written question in parliament, that payment to councillors has commenced after recommendations by the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers were published. Thereafter a payment model for the payment was finalised mid-November and payments are expected to happen soon.
The department budgeted a total amount of R309 million for this purpose and said by the end of November approximately 4 000 councillors still needed to be paid. The provincial breakdown for the number of councillors that qualified for the pay-out was not available yet.
