The actor is allowed to leave for toilet breaks and also to address the student Union. 

Actor Shia LaBeouf is occupying a lift in Oxford as part of an “arts performance”. The event, called #ELEVATE, is being streamed on YouTube.

Aside from a break to give a talk at the Oxford Union at 8pm and brief trips to the toilet, LaBeouf is spending 24 hours in the lift. The Hollywood star is joined by friends and musical collaborators Nastja Ronkko and Luke Turner, as well as other visitors to the building.

Speaking to students in the lift, LaBeouf said he was invited by the president of the union after the actor set up his own call centre in Liverpool, which members of the public could phone to ask him questions.

The 29-year-old star said: "Stuart the president said: 'Do you want to stand in the same spot as Malcolm X?' 

Speaking about the project to fans, he said: "[It's about] getting to know people, connecting to people.

"Men who get lost, like explorers, end goal is they hope they find a new world, a new land.

"Who... am I to argue with that?" "We're hoping that we find a more sincere affect." 

LaBeouf has sent a precedent for the stunt with a number of other performance art pieces.

In 2014, in response to being accused of plagiarism he wore a paper bag over his head with the message "I am not famous any more" - and sat in a Los Angeles art gallery, where members of the public were able to interact with him.


LaBeouf began his career as a child actor in Disney Channel comedy Even Stevens, and went on to star in the Transformers movies.
